The United Nations recognized International Women’s Day in 1977 but the day has much deeper roots. It was first celebrated on March 8th, 1913, in Russia, as a peaceful protest against the war. Women’s movements from across Europe rallied next year and March 8th became the day of women empowerment. At that time, women were raising awareness of the war, work conditions, and social issues.
After the Second World War, women’s movements started to speak about equality in the workplace, equal payment, and women’s rights. International Women’s Day became a symbol of femininity, strength, and solidarity. Women reclaimed the right to have an abortion, occupy leadership positions, take action, and celebrate diversity. They were no longer a silent partner but a force ready to stand up for its rights.
Today, March 8th is celebrated around the world. People celebrate the strength and wisdom of women who lead countries and governments; the caring and empathy of women who fight for peace and human rights; the intelligence and creativity of women who master the world of science and art; the courage of women who fly planes and travel in space; the endless love of mothers. They celebrate the great female voices that made history but also their mothers, partners, colleagues, and friends.
Most of all, International Women’s Day reminds us of a battle. It was a long and heartbreaking battle for equality, tolerance, and peace. Women had to fight to win access to education, well-paid jobs, science and research, leadership, and art. So March 8th is about them, the women who followed their paths and proved that we’re all equal even if we’re different.
When you see a woman admiring the ocean you see beauty and grace. But beyond the fragile appearance that charms your eye, there’s a precise surgeon, a teacher in computer science, or an artist. It’s a strong and courageous person who climbed the Everest. It’s also a mother or a grandmother worrying about her family. It’s a friend who never leaves your side and answers the phone in the middle of the night. When you see a woman admiring the ocean you see an entire universe in a human body.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to be grateful for the wonderful women in your life and respectful for their amazing achievements.
